Need help with this story problem, anybody?
Eddie and Marco are working on a landing pad for their Ultra Light aircraft that will be 10 feet longer than the width. If the area of the landing pad is to be 1200 square feet, find the length and the width.
Variables:
Let A = area
Let L = length
Let W = width
Given: 10 feet longer than the width
Means: L = W + 10
Given: Area is 1200 square feet
Means: A = 1200
Remember the area formula.
A = L * W
Apply what you're given to the formul.a
1200 = (W + 10) * W
1200 = W(W + 10)
Distribute.
1200 = W(W) + W(10)
1200 = W² + 10W
Subtract 1200 from both sides.
1200 - 1200 = W² + 10W - 1200
0 = W² + 10W - 1200
Factor.
0 = (W + 40)(W - 30)
Set each factor to 0 and solve.
W + 40 = 0
W = -40
W - 30 = 0
W = 30
Since the width cannot be negative:
W = 30
Plug this back into the first equation to find L.
L = W + 10
L = 30 + 10
L = 40
ANSWER: The width is 30 feet; the length is 40 feet.
